3 Ways Students Can Prepare For School
Summertime is in full swing and in just a few weeks, the fall season will be upon us and it’s back to school!
Teachers are planning and classrooms are getting prepared for the influx of students. While it can be easy to get caught up in the excitement (or anxiety) of the new year, it’s important to take some time to prepare. But getting back into the swing of things after a long summer break can be challenging.
The first week of school is exhausting, but if you do a little planning, it will go smoothly! With that in mind, here are three simple steps that students can take to make the transition back to academics a little easier this coming fall.
#1 – Set Back to School Goals
It’s important to set goals for yourself. Think about what you want to achieve – both for the coming year, as well as your overall academic goals.
Getting good grades is obviously part of any academic goal, but what else would you like to achieve? Perhaps there are some extracurricular activities (like clubs, leadership, or athletics) that you’d like to consider.
Also, think about the long term with the college you’d like to attend. Besides academics, what do they look for in a student? Consider adding those to your goals for the coming year.
Be sure to get specific with your goals. Having specific goals will help you stay motivated and focused during the school year.
#2 – Get Organized
Order your supplies: Backpacks, binders, folders, binder tabs, notebooks, pens, pencils and highlighters, etc… Expect to receive numerous papers your first day, so make sure you have a system in place, to ensure these papers do not end up at the bottom of your backpack.
If it’s your first time starting at the school, visit your campus and familiarize yourself with the location of the Main Office, Counseling Office, Wellness Center, library, and gym… Where do you see yourself eating lunch or spending time with friends during brunch?
Buy some clothes that make you feel confident that first day (& week) of school.
Print out the school calendar and the bell schedule, so you know when classes will start and end. Class start times are different this year for many students.
Remember, a well-organized student leads to success.
#3 – Enjoy Vacation
At the risk of going against everything we just said, be sure to enjoy your remaining summer vacation! Get outside and enjoy the summer weather while it’s still here.
Dedicate some time each day to summer reading and get back in the flow of homework.
This helps you avoid any school burnout before it’s even begun. Also, it will help you stay healthy physically and mentally.
