Creating a College Narrative
Creating a College Narrative is an effective way to stand out in the Admission Process
Here are five steps that students can follow to help create their own narrative and find their passions:
1. Start with self-reflection:
Encourage students to take the time to reflect on their interests, skills, and values. They can ask themselves questions such as: What am I good at? What do I enjoy doing? What motivates me? What are my values and beliefs?
2. Identify themes:
Once students have reflected on their interests and values, they can look for themes or patterns that emerge. For example, they may notice that they have a passion for social justice, or that they enjoy working with children. These themes can help form the basis of their narrative.
3. Pursue interests:
Encourage students to use their summer or free time to explore their interests further. This could involve volunteering, taking a class, working on a personal project, or starting a passion project. A passion project is an excellent way to delve deeper into a particular interest or hobby and showcase creativity and initiative.
4. Create a narrative:
Once students have identified their passions and pursued them, they can start to create a narrative that ties everything together. A passion project can be an excellent addition to a portfolio, highlighting a student’s creativity, initiative, and dedication to their interests.
5. Be authentic:
Remind students that the most important thing is to be authentic and true to themselves. They should not try to craft a narrative that they think colleges want to hear, but rather focus on sharing their unique experiences and perspectives.
We Can Help!
By following these steps, students can develop a narrative that sets them apart in the college admissions process. Encourage them to take the time to reflect on their interests, explore new opportunities, pursue passion projects, and be true to themselves.
