Exploring College Majors and Careers

When it comes to exploring college majors and careers, here’s something we hear a lot of…

“My student has absolutely no clue what they want to do after high school!”

In fact, we hear this from parents all the time, and that’s okay!

Here’s a little secret: You don’t need to have it all figured out.

High school is a time to explore interests, discover strengths, and learn about new possibilities. Students don’t need to have a career picked out at 16, but they should be taking steps to learn more about themselves and the opportunities available to them.

Here are five ways to get started.

1. Start Conversations

Encourage students to interview family members, friends, neighbors, and professionals about their careers. Ask what they enjoy, what challenges they face, and how they got started. You never know when a conversation might spark a new interest or lead to an opportunity.

2. Explore Majors During College Visits

College tours aren’t just about dorms and dining halls! Ask about academic programs, internship opportunities, and what students can do with different majors. Exploring academic departments can help students discover fields they may not have considered.

3. Build a Resume and Practice Your Elevator Pitch

Start a resume early and update it throughout high school. Include activities, volunteer work, jobs, and accomplishments. Students should also practice a brief introduction about who they are and what interests them. Being able to confidently introduce yourself is a valuable skill that can open doors.

4. Try New Things!

Join a club, volunteer, take an interesting elective, or try a summer program. Not every experience will be the right fit, and that’s part of the process!

Discovering what you don’t enjoy is just as important as discovering what you love. Even when an activity isn’t the right fit, you’ve likely developed new skills, gained experience, or learned something about yourself.

5. Be Curious and Be Kind

Ask questions, show genuine interest in others, and thank people for their time. People may not remember everything you’ve accomplished, but they’ll remember how you made them feel.

You never know when a thoughtful conversation or act of kindness might lead to an unexpected opportunity.
